I just got a letter from Honda for my 03 Odyssey as part of the continuing airbag saga. We’ve already had the anti-personnel Claymore airbag actuator replaced. But now, it seems that these airbags are showing a propensity for deploying for no apparent reason. Or just for fun, who knows? Is Takata out of business yet?

Shot of Ttyymmnn as he reads the letter and realizes he just bought another Honda:

It might try to blow your head off, but it’ll run forever.

So not only was there a claymore in your dash, but a claymore that could have gone off any time it damn well pleased?

Honestly, At this point, I’m thinking about getting rid of the airbag and just letting my face hit the dash.

Yeah, pretty much. According to the letter, they installed a “noise filter” that was supposed to disable the auto-inflation feature, but while “this remedy has helped to address the concern,” it did not “satisfactorily eliminate the potential for inadvertent airbag deployment.” So in other words, the entire airbag thing was a disaster from the word go, but they decided to fix it piecemeal, rather than rip the whole thing out and start over. Of course, there may not have been sufficient units to do a full replacement the first time.

It might be safer.

I’m glad that technology has evolved to a state where we can have our vehicles cradle us in the event of a crash, but...... Now I’m not so sure I trust those systems as much.
